Lauryn Hill did not choose to be number one
This week Apple wrapped up its 100 Best Albums and apart
from the website itself being a good example of web design gone bad, it
really did make some interesting choices of Albums in the list. I am no
music expert but I know have a reasonably varied taste and can enjoy
most genre’s. I went in with an open mind and I really don’t want to
pass judgement on whether the list is “correct”.
I very much enjoyed checking the list daily and adding albums that I may not have come across and adding them to my Library. So overall it was a bit of fun.
With the final 10 announced, I found myself a bit surprised at the number one choice. Excusing my lack of music knowledge, I recognised the name Lauryn Hill but had never listened to “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” so I genuinely felt I had missed something in my life. I decided to add it to my library ready for next run.
So today I ran and I listened.
The album is fine and I appreciated and recognised the story that was being told - a questionable number choice for sure. That said, as the run continued and the album played I realised, importantly, this is in no way Lauryn’s fault. I really hope that any discussion about the list keeps that in mind.
So yes, Lauryn Hills did not choose to be number one.
